On September 4, 2025, it was reported that global automation giant ABB will deliver 1,500 marine-certified NINVA™ non-intrusive temperature sensors to Swedish company eMarine.

This cooperation marks the official entry of ABB’s NINVA technology into the global shipping sector. The NINVA sensor will complement eMarine’s advanced energy management solutions that have been deployed on major cruise ships and cargo ships around the world, which is in line with eMarine’s commitment to providing energy efficiency and sustainable development solutions for the shipping industry.

The data collected by this innovative NINVA temperature sensor will play a key role in optimizing the management of heat recovery, cooling water and ventilation systems on board. These data insights can help reduce fuel consumption, achieve quantifiable energy savings, and cut carbon dioxide emissions. This sensor has an anti-vibration capacity of up to 4g, enabling it to adapt to the harsh environment of shipping operations while maintaining a measurement accuracy comparable to that of an intrusive thermocouple sheath, and there is no need to drill holes in the tube wall.

ABB’s non-invasive temperature measurement method offers an alternative to traditional thermocouple sheaths, significantly simplifying the temperature measurement process. This clamping solution does not require drilling holes in the pipe wall, thereby eliminating the potential risk of leakage. NINVA can infer the process temperature by the surface temperature of the pipeline, and its measurement accuracy and performance can be comparable to those of intrusive measurement equipment.
